Meeting The Mayor... Almost
by Donna Tetreault
My five year old, Jackson, loves City Hall. It’s his favorite building in downtown L.A. Every time we pass by it on our way to my parents’ house he shouts out, “I want to go to City Hall and meet the Mayor!” He’s been begging me for months, so I finally got my act together and booked a tour. Jackson and his little brother Asher invited their friends from preschool and to our delight so many friends wanted to head out on the tour. It ended up we went on election day, Tuesday, March 5th. It was perfect.
Jackson and Asher know our Mayor is Antonio Villaraigosa. We talk about what goes on inside the building quite often (as much as preschoolers can handle), so when it came time for tour day, they were prepped! And interestingly, the excitement they exhibited was right up there with a trip to Disneyland!
Here are the kids setting out on their adventure! We were lucky to have three amazing tour guides. (I assume that was planned for our young, little group)
Inside the press room! That was one of the kids’ favorite stops on the visit. One of the little girls was Mayor for the day, and she answered every question shouted out to her… just like a pro!
Another favorite stop was the top of the building. We ended up catching a birds-eye-view of a police helicopter landing across the way. The kids were in awe. Asher couldn’t get enough.
We also had the chance to sit in on a City Council meeting. Yes, we were quiet enough and actually got to see council members in action.
But alas, I couldn’t pull off meeting the Mayor. His schedule was booked for the day. It ended up Jackson was okay with it. Lunch at historic Olvera Street, along with a few purchases, rounded out the day and gave the kids a little taste of downtown L.A.
Next stop, the White House, the boys say they want to meet “Obama.” Seriously, who do they think I am?
